Birthday Weekend

IMG_4915-Edit
I LOVE birthdays!!! And yesterday was Josh's (as you may have noticed!) Last weekend was his mom's birthday, so we celebrated both of them together this past Saturday.

First we had dinner at Puerto Vallarta with the family, then back to Josh's parents' house for cake & ice cream!!

On Sunday I surprised B!!! I had been planning a surprise lunch for him for a couple weeks now and I was just bursting at the seams to tell him!!! But obviously that would ruin the surprise so I had to keep my big mouth shut. Luckily it paid off and we celebrated his birthday at a local winery with delicious gourmet pizza and good friends and he had no idea!!!

Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate Josh's birthday with us!!! We love you all!!

Flashback Friday -- TURKIYE!

Turkey_410That's me in the front row, middle!

I haven't done a Flashback Friday in awhile, so today I thought I would! Actually, I started this post last week to post last Friday, but then I didn't finish until like 2 days ago, so anyway, here it is!

Today's Flashback Friday post takes us all the way back to the spring of 2007. WOW! It's already been 5 years... hard to believe!

Anyway... in college, my University had what was called GO TRIPS. Basically you could apply/sign up to take a trip and where ever you went you served with a ministry... whether it was taking care of orphans, building houses, teaching people.. whatever. You could list your top 3 picks but you couldn't necessarily choose where you wanted to go. My friend Ashley (far left) and I really wanted to go on the same trip, so we both picked the same top 3 locations but weren't guaranteed anything.

After a few weeks they have this big reveal party and make it into this huge game to find out where you're going. And I got TURKEY!!! As in "CENTRAL ASIA," as our trip was called.  I remember being absolutely SHOCKED. I think my other choices were Guatemala (which I think I put as #1 because you got to work with babies!) and somewhere else NOT ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD. And to make it even cooler, Ashley was going too!!! And it wasn't her first pick either, so to have both of us going together was awesome!

Turkey was not my first choice, mostly because I didn't think I'd get chosen for it but I thought it'd be crazy amazing if I did. The work we did in Turkey was teaching at a camp for English speaking children (mostly Americans) who were kids of missionaries that lived all over Asia and Europe. Now, for those of you that don't really know me -- I am NOT a teacher. Speaking in front of people and trying to explain things is not my forte. But I was ready and excited for the challenge!

So a few months later we were off to Turkey! (well.. first Denver, then Munich, then finally Izmir)

We spent a week with hundreds of missionary kids leading a "camp." I never even went to camp as a kid, how was I supposed to lead one?! I felt incredibly inadequate but the cool thing I learned is that God doesn't call the qualified, he qualifies the called. And honestly, I think I learned more from those kids than they ever learned from me ;) It was a very refreshing, humbling, and eye-opening week.

The camp was over on Friday so we had the weekend to do some touristy stuff. We went to the market in Izmir, ate Turkish food on the floor... but my absolute FAVORITE??

We went to freakin' EPHESUS!!!!!!!!

You guys, this was seriously one of the coolest things I have ever done in my life. Ephesians is my favorite book of the Bible... and I was THERE?! I could not even believe it. How did that happen?! I walked on the streets that Paul walked. We saw the ruins, the court, we climbed the mountain (and got lost on the way down!)...

 Oh man.

Definitely a life-changing trip. There's a million things I could say about it, but I just don't know how I can even really accurately describe the experience with words. It was incredible -- one I will never forget.

instagram snapshots of (last) week

((a few days late... oopsies!))

books  i'll be SO glad when school is over // so i can read more penguin books instead of physics!!! (ps i LOVE that penguin book!)

random sorting laundry and all they wanna do is play // apparently parking at the end of the driveway is what all the cool kids (AKA josh) are doing these days ;)

babies so one of my baby bird eggs disappeared!! there used to be 4..seriously what happened to it?! // baby snuggles!!!

bike even though my shirt says "run" i've been doing more biking lately.. and helmet hair is a good look, as evidenced // my little furry friends waiting for me after my ride!

paleo paleo soup brewing in the crockpot! // steak, sauteed veggies & a sweet potato.. eating paleo ain't so bad!!!

baseball baseball friday night we finally made it to our first bats game of the year!! it was WINDY and colder than i expected, but we still had fun... and of course ate cookies from the kizito cookie lady (really, that's the only reason we go to the games!)

lazy weekend i was originally planning on having a cookout this weekend with my family, but eric ended up having to work.. i was a little bummed we had to cancel but it kinda worked out since this weekend was pretty dreary anyway. so we spent a lot of time snuggled in bed with the bostons watching movies & going on neighborhood walks.

shoot still so much devastation from the tornado // horse! i found it fitting that we had just watched "war horse" the night before.. this horse had a white spot on its head just like joey in the movie!

The art of bathing the Bostons

First you exclaim in a very excited voice: Who wants to be the first to get a bath?!?!?! But since you say it so excitedly, they think you're saying: Who wants a super special doggy treat?!? Tricky!

And then of course, Lola comes running so you scoop her up and plop her in the sink!
  IMG_4823-Edit2 IMG_4828-Edit
And after about 5 minutes of torturous washing (darn you for trying to make her clean!!!) it's over.
  IMG_4831-Edit2
By this point the other Boston Terrier knows what's going on.
   IMG_4839-Edit4
No such luck little buddy.
  IMG_4842-Edit
Baby sister waits patiently for her brother to be cleaned!

And finally... Viola! A little Kosmo burrito!

Two clean Boston Terriers. And that is how it's done!

We got photo bombed!

So Josh and I are still working on the photos for that benefit calendar for the tornado victims of a neighboring town. We had a couple shoots this weekend and one of them was in a family's backyard.

Y'all, I thought our neighborhood was cool -- we have geese that walk the streets like they own the place, baby turtles scattered all around in the spring (I'm guessing they'll be hatching any day now!), baby bunnies that hop through our yard, and birds that make nests in our windows. It's like a nature wonderland!

But this family?

HAVE HORSES IN THEIR BACK YARD!

IMG_0123-Edit
Yeah, we definitely don't have those at home! The kids we were shooting with liked to feed the horses, so they let me feed them too. Those horses sure don't miss around with their apple slices! Kinda reminded me of Kosmo and Lola -- those little apple vultures!

IMG_0154 IMG_0116 IMG_0115
Contrary to what the pictures may suggest, I wasn't scared of them! They just kept spitting on me and trying to eat me!! (I love horses, remember?!)

And they kept walking through the background of our shot! haha! Kinda like saying We aren't gonna move out of your frame until we get more apple slices! Suckers!

Luckily, Josh worked his magic and got a great family photo!!

IMG_0159
It was so nice to meet this family and hear their amazing story (and they were troopers through the shoot too! It was chilly and WINDY!! I'm actually wearing one of Josh's hoodies ON TOP of my hoodie in these photos!!) Their home got picked up by the tornado and thrown back on the ground and shattered into pieces -- with them all inside. They all sustained injuries, but are obviously doing great now and are moving forward with their lives! Thank God they all made it out okay... material things can always be replaced!

We should be wrapping up the last few calendar shoots in the next week or two! The calendars will be for 2013, they are $10 and 100% of the proceeds go to families like this who lost everything they own and are trying to re-build their lives! If you're interested in pre-ordering a calendar check out the Facebook page for all the info! Even if you're not from around here, everyone needs a 2013 calendar, right?! It's for a great cause!!! Plus I know the photographer, and he takes AWESOME photos!!! ;)

Happy Monday, friends!

strong women

How did I get so lucky to have these three amazing women in my life?!

IMG_4822-Edit-2
There's no question how I feel about my momma. I am incredibly blessed to have her and I am thankful every day for our strong relationship and the million ways she's there for me all the time.

IMG_4820
But there's also my aunt! Bonus that she's from my Dad's side of the family. Luckily for me she has agreed to be my future children's stand-in grandpa for the Davis side ;) I'm lucky to have her... she is an amazing example and if I grow up to be half as awesome as my Aunt Kathy and my mom I'd be happy!

IMG_4818
And now, in 2 months, I'll get the sister I never had (& always wanted!!) Jenn is marrying my brother Adam in June and even though I think she's one lucky lady, he is definitely one VERY lucky dude!!! Jenn is awesome and in the words of aunt Kathy, the best thing that could have ever happened to Adam! I only wished they lived closer so we could hang out more often!!

I got to see them all last weekend at Jenn's bridal shower... next up: Bachelorette PARTAY!! And then WEDDING!!!! The countdown is on!
