5K training: weeks 1 + 2

Sorry I have been MIA again. I got back from Philadelphia late last night {due to the weather}. I will re-cap our Philadelphia trip soon, but I wanted to write a quick post about my running progress before I forget.

As you may remember, I've started training for a 5K. The run is on October 3rd, and I'm kind of a little nervous. I know it's only 3 miles, but still. That's a lot to me. I "officially" started my training for it last week, and I'm already excited about my improvement!

This whole running thing is totally new to me. I'm awesome at running on the elliptical at the gym... I can run over 6 miles on it.... but it's a TOTALLY different story outside. The first time Josh and I went running {about 3 or so weeks ago now} I couldn't even run a whole mile at once. Granted, it was over 80 degrees outside in the middle of the day and sunny, but still. Then I hurt my foot because I didn't have good running shoes.

So, due to the foot injury, last week was the first week I got to really run. My schedule {that Josh made me} started off slow... but had me running a mile straight by the end of the week.

This week {week 2} I've gotten up to 1.5 miles straight. The first time I did it I thought about throwing myself a party. {I'm easily impressed with my own progress... which is probably a good thing.. haha}. On Monday I ran 1.5 miles, then walked for 5 minutes, then ran another mile. Running 2.5 miles with only a 5 minute walking break is a big HUGE deal to me, especially when just a few weeks ago I couldn't even run a whole mile at once.

I'm so excited!!!! ABOUT RUNNING. Isn't that weird??? I never thought I would say that. I'm scared of next week though... 2 miles straight. AHH!

The picture above is of a shirt I got at the running expo in Philadelphia. I saw it and knew I just HAD to have it. It's perfect for me.. you know, with my love of penguins and all. There was a speaker there named John Bingham who is nicknamed "The Penguin." He writes columns in a magazine that Josh gets called Runner's World and Josh thought I might like to hear him speak at the expo. I'm so glad we went because he gave me great inspiration at just the right time.

Since I'm just getting into this whole running thing, I feel really slow.... and I feel like I need to be faster. I feel like I need to be able to run 7 minute miles before I can enter races. I feel like that's what people expect... SPEED. But John's whole thing is about making running fun and doing it for yourself... not awards and stuff. He says you can be slow, and that's alright. Which just gave me a little bit of encouragement... I'm slow.. so what? :)

PLUS, he's all about penguins, and really... how awesome is that?!

I had a blast in Philadelphia. Hopefully I can write about it soon. I loved going to the half marathon... seeing so many different people run 13.1 miles was inspiring. I can't wait until I can do it!!!

...And Josh is doing it again this weekend! We're off to Ohio on Friday for the Akron half marathon!
