Lucky Number 7

before the race

I'm not sure what these faces mean, but I think they mean, "HOLY CRAP IT'S COLD OUT HERE!!!!"

This morning we did the Reindeer Romp 4k {which is 2.5 miles}. When I signed up for it, it was 50 degrees outside and I was thinking, "Pshh.... 2.5 miles... I can pretty easily run 5 miles now days so 2.5 will be nothing!"

I forgot to think about the fact that it would be freezing outside and there would be hills!

Like I've mentioned before I'm not used to running in any type of weather that is below 49 degrees. Except now I think my lowest is about 37 degrees or so at the Thanksgiving run. Anyway, the point is, I was not prepared for this:

23 degrees!!!!

Even with my compression clothes on, plus an extra long sleeved shirt and fleece jacket, it was still FREEZING!!!!

And did I mention the hills? I haven't done any hill training. And there were 2 big hills on this course!!! {at least, they were big to me... a slight incline is enough to get me winded, but I was told they were pretty big to everyone else, too.}

So, with the hills and the cold, I wasn't sure what to expect. So my "big goal" {as in, the one I wasn't sure I could accomplish and would be pretty dang happy if I did} was to finish in 25 minutes which would average out to about 10:00/mile... which I haven't been able to do at a race yet, and I really wasn't sure I could do it at one with hills. My "little goal" {one that I was pretty certain I could do and would probably kick myself if I didn't} was to just beat my first 5k time.. sure as heck I hope I could run 2.5 miles now faster than I ran 3.1 miles two and a half months ago! Oh, and as always, NOT TO COME IN LAST. For some reason I am always afraid I will even though I know that's pretty silly and highly unlikely. You just never know.

i LOVE running up hills!! (not)

Well, I am happy to report that I accomplished all of these goals!!! AND I ran a 9 minute mile for the first time ever. I'm not going to mention that it's because the race actually started going down a hill. Small detail. Let's just pretend my speed work is paying off :)

I ended with a time of 25:39... a 10:19 pace and came in 7th in my age group!!!! That's not quite as impressive as Josh's 2nd in his age group, but I was pretty excited about it! Ok ok, let's be honest, it made my day :)

The only thing that would have made it better is if I hadn't stopped on one of the hills for a second. The first hill totally killed me, and the 2nd one was right at the end, so running up another hill after running 2 miles was kind of hard. I probably didn't need to stop, but I did. It was a combination of running up the hill and not being able to feel my frozen legs. BUT the good news is that the other 2 winter races I'm signed up for are through the same park, so I have 2 more chances to run up the entire hill. Plus, apparently it's a pretty challenging course and I did accomplish my goals, so I guess I can go a little easy on myself...

we did it! ok, now where's the starbucks?

And on the bright side... at least it didn't snow :o)
