Anthem 5k

So, the Anthem 5k was this past weekend. I was really looking forward to it because since it's in March I thought it would be warm. WRONG. It was only like 28 degrees that morning!! Anyway, it's the first leg of the Triple Crown which is the final 3 races leading up to my half marathon!!! Basically what I'm trying to say is that I can't believe it's already here! In 2 weeks will be the 10k, 2 weeks later the 10 miler... and then 3 weeks after that is the mini.... which makes the mini 7 weeks away! Please excuse me for a second.

Ok, I feel better now. Sort of.

So anyway, the 5k.

First of all, I'm so proud of my mom for doing her first 5k as a runner!!! Her goal was to do 15 minute miles {which she did} and she ran-walk-ran the first 2 miles, but she ran all of the 3rd!!! And now she can't wait for the next 5k because she knows she can push herself even more. The next 5k around here that I know of is May 8th.. 2 months! I'm going to turn her into a mother-runner!! She's come so far since... oh, a month ago when she thought Josh and I were crazy for doing all of these races.

Second of all, I'm super-proud of my super-fast boyfriend who PR'd the 5k with a time of 19:09. That's 6:06 minute miles!! He also had a seeded start at the race, which means he's basically an elite runner. Well, at the very least a VIP 5k runner! 19:09 people!! He was like half way done before I even crossed the start line. I couldn't even run that fast if I was being chased by a rabid bear with scissors.

Third of all, my friends Hope and Brion did their first 5k as runners, too! I am pretty sure they met their goals {I think Brion's was just to not come in last...hmm that sounds familiar...that's usually my goal!}! Way to go, guys!!!

Fourth of all, my main goal for the race was to beat my last 5k time. It was kind of hard to tell by the clocks set up along the course because when I crossed the start line it was already at 8 minutes and something, but when I got to mile 1 it was at 12 something.. and I know I didn't run any 4 minute mile! bahahaha! So, whatever. I ran pretty hard, but I felt pretty good for the first 2 miles or so. My only complaint would just be that with so many people, I found myself getting stuck behind slower people and trying to weave in and out a lot for the first mile or so. The course was mostly flat except for one small incline. With about a half mile to go, I started to feel slightly queasy, then I smelled something that just made me feel totally nauseated. By this point though, I knew the end was near so I couldn't slow down now. We finally turned a corner and I saw the finish line and I just ran for it. I have a bad habit of not stopping Gertie right as soon as I cross the finish line, but even so, I knew I had beat my previous 5k time and I was so excited!!!

I then proceeded to look for someone to celebrate with but there were over 8,000 runners and so many spectators, I couldn't find anyone I knew!!! I knew my mom, Hope, & Brion were still out there but I knew Josh was well and done like 17 hours ago... but yeah, who knows where he was. I finally found him after wandering around for 10 minutes or so.

Then I ate the most delicious free cinnamon roll from Panera Bread ever.

My final chip time was 30:14, as I found out later that afternoon when they posted the results... exactly 2 minutes faster than my first 5k back in October. I wish I had been able to push just a little harder to break 30 minutes...just 15 more seconds....5 seconds per mile and I could have done it!! Oh well, now I know for next time!

In related news, Josh has signed up for his 2nd marathon. He'll be running the Chicago Marathon on 10/10/10. And, I have decided to confront one of my "running fears" and run with a running group! This Saturday, hopefully! I keep hearing how awesome it is and that it totally changes everything, etc etc... so I'm just going to put my fears {what if I'm too slow? what if I need to stop and walk? What if....} aside and do it! Shhh....I'm secretly looking forward to it!
